National Museum of Archaeology
Finds from a seventh-century BC Phoenician trading vessel lying at 110 metres off Xlendi in Gozo, the first site that deep to be excavated by scientific divers. Amphorae, jugs and a mortise-and-tenon hull joint are shown with audio-visual work from the seabed. It is at the National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta, not on Gozo.

National Museum of Archaeology

A MUŻA display of Caruana Dingli's portraits and folk scenes from the National Collection, marking 150 years since the painter's birth. Open daily until Sunday 4 October; entry is included with the museum ticket.

UNO Malta and partner venues
The house label's fifth Malta edition runs 1 to 4 October across UNO's three stages at Ta' Qali, The Ditch, Cafe del Mar and a set of boat parties. Four-day general admission is on the final tier; single-night UNO tickets cover Friday, Saturday and Sunday, plus a Sunday beach day.
Four days of pre-1976 racing around Mdina
Mdina road circuit and Mtahleb hill climb
Four days of classic motorsport built around Mdina. It opens with a hill climb at Mtahleb, then a judged historic car and motorcycle show inside the walls, then two days of racing on the road circuit outside them. Sunday is the Mdina Grand Prix proper, in its sixteenth edition.
First Maltese edition
Esplora Interactive Science Centre
Esplora has taken the Maker Faire licence and runs the first Maltese edition over three days at the science centre in Kalkara. Makers, engineers, hobbyists and students show working projects, with the centre’s own exhibits open alongside. Tickets are sold online through ShowsHappening.
Valletta Waterfront
Free weekend activities along the Valletta Waterfront promenade through October, Saturdays and Sundays from lunchtime into the afternoon. Bouncy castles, oversized seasonal games and the 1752 vaults open if the weather turns. Opens on 3 October, the last weekend of this window.

On Notte Bianca night the National Museum of Archaeology, MUŻA and the Grand Master's Palace reopen free from 18:00 until midnight. All three close early at 16:00 that afternoon, so daytime visits need planning.

Valletta's free all-night arts festival. Palaces, churches, museums and government buildings that are normally shut open late as venues for concerts, performances and installations, and the streets stay busy until the early hours.
Eight sittings over two weekends, ages nought to three
Studio Theatre, 81 Old Mint Street
A revival of TOI TOI's sensory piece for babies and toddlers, running 10:00 and 11:30 on 3, 4, 10 and 11 October in the Studio Theatre. Eight sittings in all, each a short guided journey through clouds, butterflies and birds. Admission is nought to three years.
Heritage Malta Head Office
The members' edition of the Kalkara laboratories visit: conservators and scientists show how pigment, fibre and residue analysis is used on objects from the national collection before any restoration is attempted.
Villa Frere
Villa Frere in Pietà, an early nineteenth-century house and terraced garden built by John Hookham Frere, opens on the first Sunday of the month. Restoration is ongoing and much of the garden is still being recovered.

Villa Fiorita
The Ewfonija Chorus and Orchestra under Mariella Spiteri Cefai, with professional soloists and younger singers, at Villa Fiorita in Żebbuġ. Arias, choruses and orchestral set pieces from the standard repertoire. Proceeds go to the ARKA Foundation.

A road race and fun walk starting from Republic Street in Victoria at 7.45am on Monday 5 October. It is the first Gozo fixture after the last festa on 27 September, and the last day inside this window.
Liam Gauci on corsairs, love letters and food

An illustrated talk in English by the author Liam Gauci at the Gozo Central Public Library, with readings from his work on Maltese corsairs and on love letters sent from Malta. 10:00 to 11:30 on Wednesday 7 October. Free, but seats should be reserved.
Three nights on the Grand Harbour quay
Valletta Waterfront
Oktoberfest along the Valletta Waterfront quay, under the Grand Harbour bastions. Maltese craft brews alongside imported beers, German food and live music across three evenings. Proceeds go to the ALIVE Charity Foundation, which funds cancer research in Malta.
Third edition, four days, five venues
UNO and four further venues across the island
The Anjunadeep label's Malta weekender returns for a third year, spread across five settings rather than one site. The Thursday welcome party is at Castello Zamittello, Friday and Saturday nights are at UNO in Attard, Saturday afternoon is poolside at Cafe del Mar, and Sunday moves to a stretch of coastline. Weekend passes cover the core programme from 9 to 11 October.

An hour of opera at the piano in the Aula Mgr G. Farrugia in Victoria: transcriptions of Verdi and Wagner alongside arias sung by a guest soprano or tenor. Put on by St George's Basilica and free to attend.

An evening of commemoration for those who served and died in wartime, held along Triq il-Kbira in Ta’ Sannat from 18:45 to 20:30 on Friday 9 October. Free.
Open-air concert in the smallest hamlet on Gozo
Pjazza Santa Luċija
An annual open-air concert in the square at Santa Luċija, a hamlet of a few hundred people, performed by local musicians. Free, outdoors, 20:00 to 22:00. Part of the Opera is Gozo programme.

MICAS's autumn show, opening 10 October
MICAS — Malta International Contemporary Art Space
MICAS opens its autumn exhibition on 10 October and holds it into the new year, in the converted Ospizio complex on the Floriana bastions. New painting made in response to Malta and to the building's own light and proportions. The galleries are air-conditioned, which matters less in October than it did in August.
Skorba Prehistoric Site and Ta' Ħaġrat Megalithic Site
A special opening of two of the quieter megalithic sites at Mġarr, with a curator on hand to answer questions rather than deliver a set tour. Skorba is where the pre-temple phases of Maltese prehistory were first dated.
St Paul's Catacombs
A yoga session in the gardens above the St Paul's Catacombs in Rabat, run by Heritage Malta as part of its wellbeing strand. Saturday morning.

Gozo SPCA turns fifty

The Gozo SPCA marks its fiftieth anniversary in Għarb Square with a dog show, a photo competition, artisan stalls, face painting, a bouncy castle and a pet first-aid stand. 10:00 to 13:00 on Sunday 11 October, free.
Seven in the morning, and the finish shuts at nine
Triq il-Mitjar ta’ San Niklaw
A 10K run and walk plus a kids’ race, starting on Triq il-Mitjar ta’ San Niklaw in the limits of Siġġiewi. The 10K goes off at 07:00 and the finish closes at 09:00, so it is over before the heat. Entry is €20 up to 20 September and €25 after, the field is capped at 650, and numbers are collected the afternoon before at Eurosport B’Kara.
The last village feast of the Gozo year
Għasri Parish Church
The patronal feast of Għasri, the smallest parish on Gozo, held at the parish church on Triq Dun Karm Caruana. Procession, band marches and church services across the day. It falls well after the summer festa season has closed, so it draws the village rather than the coach trade. Free.
Torchlight, folk music and food at Għar Ilma

Second-Sunday opening of a rarely open temple site
Kordin III Megalithic Site
The Kordin III Megalithic Site in Paola, the last surviving temple structures on the Kordin promontory, opens to visitors on the second Sunday of each month. Built by Late Neolithic farmers more than 5,000 years ago. Open 10:00 to 16:00; a combo ticket with the Tarxien temples is sold.
ViBE Collective on fairies, storms and enchantment

Kite flying and wind-powered displays on the open ground at San Dimitri above Gharb, 10:00 to 18:00 across both days. Free. One of the few Gozo events staged out on the cliffs rather than in a village square, and weather-dependent by nature.
The Aurora's fiftieth-anniversary opera
Teatru tal-Opra Aurora
Verdi's La Traviata at the Teatru tal-Opra Aurora in Victoria, staged for the theatre's fiftieth anniversary. Colin Attard conducts the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and the Aurora Opera Chorus. Sung in Italian with English surtitles, one performance only, and the Aurora runs a ferry shuttle for people coming over from Malta.
Irish dance and puppetry for four to seven year olds

One of the last club nights of the season
Café del Mar Malta
The melodic house duo return to Café del Mar for one night in mid-October, one of the few club dates still on the calendar that late in the season. The same Saturday as La Traviata in Gozo, at the other end of the country and the other end of the register.
Borġ in-Nadur Prehistoric Complex
A family activity at the Borġ in-Nadur prehistoric complex above Birżebbuġa, staged as a nineteenth-century picnic. The site itself is Bronze Age and rarely open.
47th edition — 606 nautical miles around Sicily
Grand HarbourBuilds from 12 Oct
The offshore classic starts in Grand Harbour at 11:00 on 17 October and runs 606 nautical miles around Sicily and back. The staggered starts are watched from the Valletta fortifications and the Saluting Battery, which is the part worth turning up for. Boats finish across the following week; prize giving is on 24 October.
Fort St Angelo
Food and drink at Fort St Angelo on the morning the Rolex Middle Sea Race starts, with the fleet leaving the Grand Harbour below. Heritage Malta runs it as a gourmet event rather than a viewing platform.
Fort St Elmo
Fort St Elmo opens on the point at the harbour mouth for the start of the Rolex Middle Sea Race, which every boat has to sail past. The best land-based view of the start there is.
MICAS's free open day for Floriana's parish feast

MICAS opens with free admission for the day of Floriana's town feast, running three guided tours: an exhibition tour of A New Life Force at 11:00, an architectural tour of the fortifications housing the museum at 12:00, and a second exhibition tour at 16:00.

Waltzes and polkas, the orchestra's first Malta date

Thirty years of Teatru Astra’s stage sets

The Melika Saxophone Quartet opens the third Malta Festival of Ideas with a 'Myths, Legends & Stories' programme: Bernstein's West Side Story Suite, Grieg's Holberg Suite and works by Zalewski, Tamura and Gavin Whitlock. 8pm at the National Library in Valletta, EUR15.

Three consecutive evenings of Maltese folk music in the square at Qala, 20:00 to 23:00 each night. Free entry. Qala sits at the eastern end of Gozo above the Comino channel and rarely hosts anything on this scale.

The contest comes back to Malta after ten years

The 24th Junior Eurovision Song Contest, staged by PBS at the MFCC in Ta’ Qali. Sixteen broadcasters are entered and the performers are aged nine to fourteen. Malta last hosted in 2016, in Valletta, and this is the first edition ever held in October rather than December.
MUŻA — The National Community Art Museum

One of Europe's larger poker festivals takes over Casino Malta and the adjoining InterContinental arena in St George's Bay for nine days. The headline is a EUR1,500,000 guaranteed Main Event, with satellites running throughout, Mystery Bounty, High Roller and Ladies events. Four days of warm-up tournaments, Road to BOM, run 23-26 October before the festival proper opens.

Gozo's second opera of the autumn, at the Astra

Puccini's Madama Butterfly returns to Teatru Astra for the first time since 2012, in a new production given on two nights only, 29 and 31 October, both at 19:30. It forms part of Festival Mediterranea and is supported by Arts Council Malta and the Ministry for Gozo. Booking is open on the theatre's own system for both dates.

A requiem in the cathedral, the night before All Saints

A performance of a Requiem in C minor in Gozo Cathedral on the Citadel, 19:30 to 21:00, free. Programmed for the eve of the All Saints weekend, when the island's churches are lit and the Mixeghla tal-Qaddisin follows two nights later.
The Old Prison
An overnight stay in the Old Prison inside Victoria's Ċittadella, the cells of which carry graffiti cut by knights and later inmates. Heritage Malta files it under its dark history strand. Friday night before Halloween.

A stage production of The Rocky Horror Show in Republic Hall, directed by Lucienne Camilleri with musical direction by Ryan Paul Abela. Performances are on 30 and 31 October at 8.30pm and 1 November at 4pm. The organiser lists it as strictly 14 and over, with VIP tables that include food and drink.
